When Power Abuses, the People Respond
The warning signs are impossible to ignore. This week, a court allowed Florida’s notorious “Alligator Alcatraz” detention camp to remain open, the Heritage Foundation pushed a plan that would gut child care and safety nets, Trump prepared to host wealthy crypto investors, and the Justice Department moved to expand executions by allowing firing squads.
At the same time, climate injustice is growing clearer: shade and trees are becoming luxuries, mining threats near the Boundary Waters are back, rooftop solar is under attack, and Republicans are trying to shield Big Oil from lawsuits.
These are not isolated stories. They are connected warnings about cruelty, corruption, extraction, and control. Families are punished, immigrants are caged, public lands are threatened, and wealthy interests profit while ordinary people pay the price. We refuse to look away. Communities are organizing. Advocates are rising. Truth is breaking through. And people across this country are refusing to surrender their rights, their dignity, or their democracy. Power still belongs to the people — and together, we can protect our communities and each other.

An abusive detention camp in the Everglades is staying open, and that should alarm everyone. A federal appeals court let Florida’s notorious “Alligator Alcatraz” keep operating without federal environmental review, even as the site threatens the Everglades and cages immigrants in a remote detention complex. People power means defending ecosystems, human dignity, and stopping mass detention before cruelty becomes infrastructure. Mother Jones
The Heritage Foundation Wants to “Save the Family” by Further Undermining Child Care
They call it saving families while making family life harder. Truthout reports the Heritage Foundation’s new plan would gut child care, slash safety nets, and deepen instability for parents, care workers, and children, especially as mass deportation threats grow. Selling access to a president is corruption, no matter what they call it. The Guardian reports Trump is hosting a Mar-a-Lago event for top buyers of his $Trump memecoin, with top investors promised special access while watchdogs warn of pay-to-play risks and personal profit from public office. Justice Department to allow firing squads for executions in move to ramp up capital punishment
The Trump Justice Department wants to expand execution methods by bringing back firing squads. NPR reports DOJ will permit firing squads and reauthorize pentobarbital executions as it pushes to speed up federal death penalty cases. A government that normalizes more killing does not make us safer. People power means defending human rights, rejecting state cruelty, and refusing to let authoritarian punishment become policy. NPR
Access to trees is becoming a luxury in European cities
Climate injustice is becoming a neighborhood map. Politico Europe reports that wealthy Europeans are far more likely to have access to nature, while fewer than 15 percent of people in 862 cities studied had proper access to trees, shade, and green space. Senate Votes to Allow Mining Near Boundary Waters Wilderness
One vote can put an entire wilderness at risk. The Senate voted 50-49 to repeal protections near Minnesota’s Boundary Waters, opening the door to mining near one of the country’s most visited wilderness areas. California’s Regressive Rooftop Solar Policy Hit With Second Appeal to State Supreme Court
California families should not be punished for choosing clean energy. A new appeal asks the state Supreme Court to overturn a policy that slashes rooftop solar credits, reduces demand for new systems, and hits low-income communities and communities of color especially hard.
